British Swim School Expands to Serve More Ohio Residents

The Nation’s Premier ‘Learn to Swim’ Provider Now Offering Lessons in the Eastern Area of Columbus

British Swim School, the nation’s leading “learn to swim” franchise, is excited to announce the opening of its newest location in Ohio. British Swim School of New Albany-Powell is owned and operated by Shelly Harvey. Lessons will be taught at Esporta Fitness, 6585 East Broad Street in Columbus, as well as at The Harcum Fitness and Aquatic Center, 2227 Taylor Park Drive in Reynoldsburg.
It’s a big career change for Harvey, who comes from the world of mortgage banking. “I’ve always had a passion for health and wellness,” Harvey admitted. “When I decided to leave banking, I realized I wanted to do something that made a difference—something that gave back to the community.”
Shelly was attracted to British Swim School because its main goal is to prevent drownings. “By offering people of all ages the chance to learn the essential skill of swimming, I am helping to save lives. There’s no better feeling than that.” For more than 40 years, British Swim School has been dedicated to teaching water survival by giving infants, children, and adults of all ages the skills needed for water acclimation, water survival, and stroke development. Its mission — ensure that every person, regardless of age or ability, has the opportunity to become a safe and happy swimmer. Across the nation, eleven people die every day from unintentional drownings, with nearly 4,000 deaths occurring each year. Research shows that participation in formal swim programs, such as those offered by British Swim School, can reduce the risk of drowning by 88% among children who are most at risk for deaths caused by drowning. However, the risk of drowning isn’t limited to children: a Red Cross survey found that more than half of all Americans (54%) either can’t swim or don’t have the basic swimming skills needed to save themselves in the event of a water emergency.
Ashley Gundlach, President of British Swim School, expressed her enthusiasm about the new locations. “Shelly’s commitment to health and wellness combined with her passion for helping others align perfectly with our mission. We are confident she’ll make a significant impact throughout the Columbus area.”
