Nation’s Premier ‘Learn to Swim’ Provider Will Teach Local Families Life-Saving Techniques
British Swim School, the nation’s leading “learn to swim'' franchise company, is thrilled to announce Jamal Motlagh as the new owner of British Swim School of San Diego. Working alongside him to manage the daily operations is his wife, Eva Szymanski.
The Grand Opening was Tuesday, April 11th at the pool inside 24 Hour Fitness at 10025 Carmel Mountain Road in the Plaza Rancho Penaquitos. Swim lessons are currently scheduled for Tuesday and Thursday from 3:30-7:30pm and on Saturday between 9:00-1:30pm.
“We are excited to bring the mission of the British Swim School brand, ‘Survival of the Littlest’ to the area,” said Jamal Motlagh, co-owner of British Swim School of San Diego. “We have the incredible opportunity to help prevent drownings and save lives. We’re also looking forward to having an opportunity to become a deeper part of this community.”
British Swim School offers a variety of swim lessons for children and adults of all ages, some as young as 3 months old, teaching water acclimation, safety and survival skills, and swim stroke development. While adult supervision is always the number one safety measure, research shows that participation in formal swim programs, such as those offered by British Swim School, can reduce the risk of drowning by 88 percent among children who are most at risk for deaths caused by drowning.
San Diego County has reported an average of more than 35 drowning deaths every year since 2017.
“Even one drowning death is too many,” says Eva. “Of course, where there is water, there is risk and, in this area, we are surrounded by water – whether it be the ocean or the large number of public and backyard pools. We are eager to be part of a mission-driven business that teaches a critical life skill to prevent drownings and save lives.”
The couple also plans to lead by example. Their own young children, ages seven and four, will be taking part in the programs at British Swim School of San Diego to strengthen their swimming skills.
“I want to give my children, as well as every other child in our community the opportunity to be safe in the water and develop a love for aquatics,” Eva explained, “being in the water is second nature to me.” “I've been a swimmer since I was very young,” Jamal Added. “I was a national champion water polo player and even played professionally in Spain. When I learned about the opportunity to own a British Swim School, it was a natural fit. I’ve owned businesses before, so this combines my entrepreneurial background and my passion for swimming.”
British Swim School launched in England in 1981, was then brought to the United States and Canada and through franchising has grown to more than 300 locations. The company has been revolutionary in the development of an aquatics program focused on water acclimation and survival.
"We are grateful to have the opportunity to bring such an incredible and necessary business, like British Swim School to the community in San Diego," said Ashley Gundlach, British Swim School President. "With Jamal offering important swim safety instruction, more children will have access to this crucial life-saving skill."
