British Swim School Splashes into Irvine

The Nation’s Premier, “Learn to Swim” Provider Expands with Greater Irvine Location

British Swim School, the nation’s leading “learn to swim” franchise, continues to make a splash with their newest location in Irvine. Margie and Gavino Torres opened British Swim School of Greater Irvine in late June. Lessons are held twice a week at the L.A. Fitness located at 2880 Michelle Drive in Irvine.

The Torres’s are first-time business owners. The parents of a 3-and 4-year-old were looking for a situation that suited their beliefs and that they could dive into while exploring the franchising world. Margie and Gavino’s own children, who had yet to receive proper swim instruction, served as a compelling example of the transformative influence they could impart upon their family and community.

“The Irvine area is really family-centric, and we felt like this was a perfect opportunity,” Margie said. “It’s pool season and there’s water everywhere here. I think doing something that feels like it makes a difference and being able to connect to families like us really drew us to British Swim School.”

For more than 40 years, British Swim School has been dedicated to teaching water survival skills by teaching infants, children and adults of all ages the skills needed for water acclimation, water survival, and stroke development. Its mission ensure that every person, regardless of age or ability, has the opportunity to become a safe and happy swimmer.

Across the nation, eleven people die every day from unintentional drownings, with nearly 4,000 deaths occurring each year. Research shows that participation in formal swim programs, such as those offered by British Swim School, can reduce the risk of drowning by 88% among children who are most at risk for deaths caused by drowning. However, the risk of drowning isn’t limited to children: a Red Cross survey found that more than half of all Americans (54%) either can’t swim or don’t have the basic swimming skills needed to save themselves in the event of a water emergency.

Margie will serve in the aquatics director role for the new British Swim School location while Gavino will assist in several other areas of the business. “Irvine is tucked right next to the ocean, so this is an area that is essential for children to learn proper swim safety,” said Ashley Gundlach, President of British Swim School. “Margie and Gavino are extremely family oriented, and they want what’s best for their family while making an impact on families around them. We couldn’t be happier to have them aboard and spread our message of, ‘Survival of the Littlest’ to the Irvine community.”
