Aquatics international featured British Swim School in an article recently published referencing the rapid growth of swim school franchises in recent years. In fact, British Swim School was one of two swim instruction franchises to make this year's Entrepreneur Franchise 500 list. Industry professionals speculate the growth in swim instruction franchises is driven by "a greater awareness for water safety and attractive opportunities for aspiring business owners," which is encouraging as one of the main goals of British Swim School is to educate the public on the dangers that pools pose to children, and the importance of water survival skills.
"British Swim School is riding a wave of momentum."
Rita Goldberg founded British Swim School 35 years ago and began franchising the business in 2011. British Swim School has now reached over 100 pools in 15 states and Turkey and increased the total number of classes by over 100,000 from 2015, teaching a total of 475,000 swim lessons in 2016. 2017 is looking like another big year for British Swim School as they have already awarded 8 new agreements. The other rapidly growing swim instruction franchise mentioned in the article is Goldfish Swim School, founded in 2006, which has 40 schools open and 25 in development across the United States. While both companies are learn-to-swim franchises, they differ greatly in their programs and business models. The initial investment for Goldfish is between $1.4 and $3 million, the majority of which goes toward the buildout of a fixed pool location where classes are held. The initial investment for British Swim School is significantly less, ranging between $80,000 and $100,000, because franchise owners host classes in existing pools in fitness center, hotels, and other locations in exchange for a swimming pool usage fee. When questioned about the growing competition in the industry, Rita Goldberg said "The fact that they're marketing private swim schools and we're marketing private swimming schools, we all benefit."
